New Steam Game Is Like John Wick Meets 007 First Light with GTA 6 Flavor

A brand-new third-person shooter on Steam called Blackwood combines the action-packed gameplay of 007 First Light with the combat choreography of the John Wick movies, while also giving players some GTA 6-style criminal life-sim elements. Blackwood's release on Steam is right around the corner, so fans of genre-mashup games won't have to wait long to play it.

One of the most interesting aspects of Blackwood is its dual-sided gameplay: the protagonist actually needs to run a DVD store and manage its stock and prices like a real shop simulation game. But at night, he becomes a professional assassin who gets paid on the dark web to take out various targets. This dual gameplay approach also feels similar to how John Wick and James Bond are forced to live two separate lives.

Developer AttritoM7 Productions has used actual stuntpeople to create realistic ranged and melee combat scenes. The result is fast-paced action that looks like 007 First Light's gunfights. Players can mix shooting with close-range fist-to-fist combat, and the protagonist will also make use of surrounding items to take out enemies, similar to how John Wick fights using firearms, melee weapons, and martial arts.

Blackwood's DVD store basically serves as a cover for the protagonist's actual source of income: murder contracts. Players will therefore earn two different types of money, distinguished as Clean Cash and Dirty Cash. The former can be used for shopping at legal online stores via the in-game computer. The latter, however, can only be used on the dark web to purchase illegal firearms, ammunition, and other stuff that might not be available through standard marketplaces. This mechanic might remind fans of how GTA 6 robberies and heists are said to feature a money laundering mechanic that forces players to clean their earnings before spending them.

Like the classic Max Payne games, Blackwood features a Shootdodge-style dive and bullet time system that allows for cinematic killcams. That said, the developer has tried to keep combat as challenging as possible despite the protagonist's skills and arsenal. For instance, health regeneration is not a prominent feature, and damage taken is, for the most part, permanent. AttritoM7 Productions says, "Health is divided into stages, meaning you won't automatically recover full vitality after completing an encounter."

The John Wick series is already getting an official video game adaptation that's being developed in collaboration with the franchise's director and seems to feature Keanu Reeves as the protagonist. Known as the Untitled John Wick Game, it is being developed by Saber Interactive, the studio behind games like Space Marine 2. However, the game has no release window and might take years to come out. Blackwood, on the other hand, launches on September 16, 2026, and could be the perfect replacement for fans of the furious killer John Wick.

Blackwood will be released in three acts. Act One arrives in September 2026, followed by Act Two in March 2027 and Act Three in September 2027. All the content will be added as free updates and won't require additional payment.
