One of the biggest releases of this week has been the open-world dark fantasy action RPG The Blood of Dawnwalker, and considering it has four graphics modes across Xbox Series X and S in all, we've been curious to see how it'd fare.
As we often do, we're looking to Fuzion Xbox Testing for some initial footage of both the Series X and Series S versions of The Blood of Dawnwalker, and there are definitely some interesting insights to be gained from them.
On Xbox Series X, The Blood of Dawnwalker has separate 30FPS, 40FPS and 60FPS modes that all feature a dynamic 4K resolution, and most of them look good and retain their target frame rates pretty well, although the 60FPS mode in particular drops quite regularly into the mid-50s (so a VRR display is advised). The only major problem here is that the 30FPS mode suffers from frame pacing issues, which we assume will be ironed out over time.
For what it's worth, here's what Video Games Chronicle suggests for the Xbox Series X version:
"If you have a 120Hz, VRR display, the Performance Mode is the obvious choice, and Xbox consoles have LFC technology built-in, ensuring games will look as smooth as they possibly can. Much like the PS5, however, performance dips will inevitably happen, and if you don’t have a VRR-capable display, you might wish to run the game using the 30 FPS Graphics Mode instead, but that will still suffer from frame pacing instability."
On Xbox Series S, The Blood of Dawnwalker only has one single mode at a 1080p resolution, and the frame rate is supposed to be targeting 30FPS, but this footage suggests it goes beyond that as well. We're not quite sure what's happened there, but for what it's worth, the folks over at Video Games Chronicle also say it's a 30FPS mode with occasional drops, although "generally playable and a decent way to enjoy The Blood of Dawnwalker".
"On Xbox Series S, there are no Quality Mode options. The game simply targets 30 FPS at 1080p. The frame rate can drop below the target, especially in cutscenes and combat, but it’s generally playable and a decent way to enjoy The Blood of Dawnwalker."
We'll leave you with the raw footage from Fuzion Xbox Testing below for The Blood of Dawnwalker on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, and please do let us know in the comments how you're getting on with it if you bought it!
