He may not have caught them all by the end of his Pokémon journey (or got anywhere even near close), but Ash truly did become the very best, like no one ever was. Ash has participated in countless tournaments and championships – even winning some. By his side, he always had his trusty Pokémon. While Ash's team is very diverse, he has a fair share of starter Pokémon from all the different regions he's visited.
Not all of Ash's starters are built equally. Some, like Bulbasaur and Totodile, never even evolved fully, forever stuck in their base forms. On the other hand, Ash's strongest starter Pokémon are a large reason why he was able to pull off his greatest victories. Ash wouldn't be a champion today if he didn't keep his starters on standby, ready to take on the greatest Trainers who ever lived.
Incineroar doesn't get to do much after evolving, but in its brief time on Ash's team, the Alolan Fire starter pulls off one of the most impressive feats in the entire franchise. During the final battle of Pokémon: Sun and Moon, Ash's trusty Torracat finally evolves into Incineroar. Despite Kukui's Incineroar being one of the most formidable Pokémon on Kukui's team, Ash's Incineroar actually manages to defeat his champion counterpart.
Kukui has had his Incineroar since he was just a boy, and has trained him ever since. He's more than just the Alolan Champion's ace – he is a genuine partner who has defeated some of the most powerful trainers alive. Even then, Ash's bond with Torracat was so strong, that all it took was evolving for Ash's Incineroar to overpower an experienced Pokémon that had been battling professionally for decades. The only thing holding Incineroar back from ranking higher is his late evolution.
Charizard is very powerful, but he doesn't have the best battle record thanks to issues with his Nature. Since Ash technically obtained Charizard via a trade, the Pokémon stopped respecting him as he evolved. In the games, Trainers only need eight Badges to get Pokémon of any level to obey their commands, but it's possible that some of Ash's illegitimate wins in Kanto kept Charizard from fully listening to him. Fortunately, Charizard doesn't have that problem anymore.
Ash's Charizard became one of the few Kanto Pokémon almost always brought back for his tournament battles. Ash's Charizard helped him win the Orange League alongside Pikachu and Tauros and defeated an extremely powerful Articuno at the Battle Frontier. The main thing holding Charizard back is the fact that Ash stopped using his near the end of his journey. He didn't even bring him to the Masters Eight Tournament, though looking at his team, there's really no one Charizard could have replaced.
Ash's Infernape has one of the best arcs in the Pokémon anime, going from a timid, weak Chimchar abandoned by his trainer, to one of Ash's most steadfast allies. Monferno really pulls above his weight for most of Sinnoh, helping Ash earn some major victories. The Sinnoh Fire starter only becomes more impressive after evolving into Infernape – easily the strongest of Ash's Fire Type Pokémon, and one of the most powerful Mon on his bench.
