Killzone Remaster Or Remake Reportedly In Development

Killzone Remaster Or Remake Reportedly In Development

Killzone might not be completely dead after all. That’s according to new reports suggesting that, after a decade of focusing on nothing but Horizon, Guerrilla Games might be turning at least some of its attention back to the series that put it on the map.

That’s according to a new report from MP1st. The site has claimed that according to people familiar with what’s going on at Guerrilla, the first-party PlayStation studio is working on a new Killzone game. Not a new entry in the series, but a remaster or remake of a previous Killzone title, all of which were released during a nine year period between 2004 and 2013.

Which Killzone game might be getting the remaster/remake treatment is unknown. It seems almost certain that, if the project is real, it will be the original Killzone, though. This isn’t a Dragon Quest situation where it would make sense to remake the games out of release order. This is a Halo situation, or it will be, where it would be logical to remake the first game first.

Apt considering how Killzone was once labeled the “Halo killer”.

Guerrilla’s entire focus has been on Horizon ever since it left Killzone behind, releasing four games since 2017 - two mainline entries alongside VR and Lego Horizon spinoffs. It’s currently working on Horizon Hunters Gathering, a live service game that might not ever get a full release according to feedback from the most recent playtests, and a third game in the main Horizon series.

So, what has changed? With two more Horizon games in active development, how does Guerrilla have enough time to return to Killzone? Well, it doesn’t. Not alone. The report claims Guerrilla has partnered with another studio to make the Killzone remaster/remake happen. The name of that studio is unknown, but it is noted that it isn’t a first-party PlayStation team.

A shame PlayStation didn’t keep Bluepoint around. Sounds like the sort of project it could have really helped with.

Even though it has been 13 years since the last Killzone game, it does feel like PlayStation and Guerrilla might have been testing the waters a little. In 2024, Helldivers 2 received a Killzone crossover. There was even a lore suggestion that the games exist in the same universe. Perhaps Helldivers studio Arrowhead is the mysterious partner studio helping Guerrilla on this rumored Killzone project. Even though Helldivers 2 is strongly associated with PlayStation, PlayStation does not own Arrowhead.
