As far as horror fans are concerned, September marks the official beginning of the spooky season. So, while Halloween is still technically many weeks away, the time has come to start binging horror films, both old favorites and brand-new watches, in order to get in the All Hallow's mood. Thankfully, those with Netflix subscriptions are sorted, as the platform is adding a range of new horror content to its library this month.
For starters, the epitome of sci-fi horror that is Alien is returning to Netflix from September 1st, along with its action-packed superlative sequel Aliens. Likewise, all four Jaws movies arrive the same day, so now is your chance to relive Steven Spielberg's iconic creature feature. Those are all absolute classics of the genre that most horror fans have probably seen many times over, so for those in the mood to find something fresh, these seven films — encompassing all kinds of eras of horror and all kinds of subgenres — should do the trick (or treat).
For those who like their horror on the psychological thriller end of the scale, there's Gothika. Though its screenplay has received some criticism, this 2003 effort is a fantastic showcase for Halle Berry's talents. Berry stars as Dr. Miranda Grey, a successful psychiatrist who wakes from a car crash to find herself incarcerated in the psychiatric hospital she once worked at. From there, the viewer is thrown into as disorienting an experience as Miranda, especially when the troubled heroine learns her husband was murdered, and she has been deemed the prime suspect. Can Miranda piece together her fragmented psyche to discover the truth of what happened?
In all honesty, Gothika is not the greatest example of its genre, and critics weren't exactly kind to it at the time of its release. Still, Berry's committed performance is a must-see for any fans of the X-Men actor, and its entertainment value is high if you're looking for a movie with a twisty-turny narrative that is genuinely hard to second-guess. Whether that is because it's smart and surprising or because it's just too nonsensical to predict is up to the individual viewer.
Speaking of X-Men, any Marvel lovers looking to get familiar with actor Samara Weaving ahead of her starring role in the MCU's upcoming X-Men reboot need to start with Ready or Not. The Australian actor received her big break with this snappy, funny, thrilling feature from Radio Silence filmmakers Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, and it's easy to see why she has cemented herself as a contemporary scream queen ever since.
Unfolding across one blood-soaked night, 2019's Ready or Not follows Grace on her wedding night to Daniel, the scion of the wealthy La Domas family. As per family tradition, the bride must play a game to be officially welcomed into the clan. Unfortunately for Grace, the game she is assigned to play is Hide and Seek, which turns out to have murderous rules.
Ready or Not rolls along at a fast clip thanks to its wit, verve, and strong command of tension, and there are some great supporting turns from Adam Brody, Henry Czerny, and Andie MacDowell. A sequel, inevitably titled Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, released in 2026 and did a good job of expanding the first film's mythology, but the original movie is easily the superior effort.
There are only a small handful of truly iconic slasher movie killers, and Leatherface is one of them. In fact, he's arguably the first, as it was 1974's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (not to be confused with its 2003 remake, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) that really kickstarted the slasher trend of the 1970s and '80s. Even today, the original film still holds up thanks to its relentless brutality and oppressive energy.
