GTA 6 is finally set to arrive on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, but Nintendo fans holding out hope for a Switch 2 release may want to lower their expectations.
Rockstar’s long-awaited open-world title is incredibly ambitious, with a fully realized state of Leonida, a return to Vice City, and a slew of advanced gameplay mechanics.
While a PC release is almost certainly coming down the line, some players believe that a Switch 2 port could be in the cards, though nothing has been confirmed or denied by Rockstar.
Now, a former GTA 6 dev has weighed in on the possibility. In a members-only interview with YouTuber Kiwi Talkz, Jérémy Hartvick shared his thoughts on the game appearing on Switch 2.
According to Hartvick, who worked on GTA 6 up until 2020, the answer is “complicated,” and there would need to be concessions in order for it to run on Switch 2 hardware.
“I don’t believe it even makes sense, because I’m not sure the audience for GTA 6 is so much the audience for the Switch. If you’re a GTA fan, you would probably buy a console on which GTA will come out,” he said.Hartvick continued, noting that in Rockstar’s case, because people will go out of their way to buy a console just for their games, it may not be worth the risk.
“Does it make sense for you to go out of your way to probably deliver a subpar experience, because it does not run exactly the same when you know anyone will buy a PS5 to get your game? No.”
The former GTA 6 dev did, however, note that he didn’t think it was “totally ludicrous,” but added that with streaming technology, it may be possible to make GTA 6 work on many different platforms by running it through servers.
