The last few years have seen a stark rise in Manhwa-based anime adaptations. The biggest catalyst when it comes to the popularization of Manhwa worldwide has quite easily been Solo Leveling, a Manhwa by Redice Studio turned anime by Aniplex and A-1 Pictures in 2024. Solo Leveling’s massive success has inspired many series to follow in its footsteps and achieve similar success. Some manhwa that have come after it follow it to such a degree that they even look like straight-up copycats.
This year, we’ve already seen the release of Tomb Raider King, but a new Solo Leveling-like story has now been announced by Crunchyroll. SSS-Class Revival Hunter, a popular South Korean story similar to Solo Leveling, has officially had its new anime confirmed. SSS-Class Revival Hunter is hitting Crunchyroll in January 2027, and it has huge potential if adapted well.
Manhwa series have been growing rapidly in global popularity after decades of living in the shadow of Japanese manga. Just recently, we learned of quite a few Manhwa series with newly confirmed animated projects on the way. A new Manhwa series has now been added to this upcoming roster, and it is a series titled “SSS-Class Revival Hunter.” For fans unfamiliar with the series, SSS-Class Revival Hunter is a South Korean novel by creator Sinnoa. It ran online between November 2018 and May 2020 on Munpia. Its humble success with the novel led to a Manhwa adaptation, which is actually still ongoing. The Manhwa of SSS-Class Revival Hunter started its run in December 2020, and it's been getting consistent updates on KakaoPage since.
On September 9, 2026, this rising South Korean story was confirmed for a new anime adaptation via Crunchyroll, its official licensee. This project was confirmed with a new teaser trailer. The short teaser showcases some of the cast, as well as the people working on the project. Even though the project was just announced, we already know when it’s being released. SSS-Class Revival Hunter is coming in January 2027, and the animation is handled by Studio Fu. Crunchyroll confirmed the anime is currently in production.
Studio Fu is a rather new Japanese animation studio, founded in 2025, and led by Fuminori Hara. We’re looking forward to seeing how they handle this new project. Because of how short the teaser is, it’s hard to say what quality to expect at the moment from this anime. The extremely close release date, however, does raise some eyebrows. We do still hope that SSS-Class Revival Hunter will have a worthwhile anime adaptation, similar to recent Manhwa anime series successes like Solo Leveling. A longer teaser trailer would be perfect to assess its quality.
SSS-Class Revival Hunter’s story concept is interesting. This Manhwa follows the main character Kim Gong-Ja. In this world, mysterious Towers appear, and Kim Gong-Ja starts off his journey rather weak. He is a very low-ranking Hunter. One day, however, he gains an advanced ability that allows him to copy the powers of others. This S-Rank ability activates after his death and allows him to shoot beyond his previous limits. With this new power, his true journey to becoming the strongest begins.
Upon hearing the short synopsis of this story, most fans immediately notice glaring similarities with another far more popular story. Indeed, the plot points of SSS-Class Revival Hunter are quite similar to those observed in Solo Leveling. Mysterious towers, similar to Gates, appear, and people start awakening abilities. The journey of a meek Hunter who awakens to new powers after being killed sounds awfully similar to Jinwoo gaining the System after almost facing death. Even the concept of ranked Hunters is directly taken from Solo Leveling.
These similarities aren’t a coincidence. It is quite clear that Sinnoa has taken heavy inspiration from Chugong’s Solo Leveling. This isn’t exactly unique to SSS-Class Revival Hunter, but a trend across Manhwa in general. We know that SSS-Class Revival Hunter took inspiration from Solo Leveling and not the other way around, as Chugong’s story predates it by 2 years. While SSS-Class Revival Hunter has a lot of similarities to Solo Leveling on the surface, the story does take its own initiative after the beginning. It’s still a worthwhile story to dive into, and the new anime will push it to a new audience. While waiting for the return of Solo Leveling, which is making a comeback with a new movie titled Solo Leveling: Beyond the System, sometime in late 2027 or 2028, SSS-Class Revival Hunter could be a perfect replacement from Crunchyroll.
