EA Sports FC 27 is the fourth game launched under the original title following the end of EA's collaboration with FIFA, and though a lot of it feels the same, this is the most transformative entry in over a decade for Career Mode players.
I was quite happy with how FC 26 turned out, with more realistic gameplay making it feel a lot closer to a football match, but there was still that overly polished, showman football on display. Any Career Mode player knows the 'joys' of playing Barnsley in theory but facing prime Barcelona in practice, and that made it hard to get immersed in the game.
FC 27 dares to go where previous games wouldn't, embracing football as both the beautiful game and a dirty, greedy show that is often painful to watch, both on and off the pitch.
One of my most rewarding career mode experiences last year was turning FC Nantes from bottom dwellers into European regulars, so it felt natural to go back to France for a taste of FC 27.
Things are a lot different this season. Nantes went down to Ligue 2 following an abysmal season, rising star Matthis Abline left for Monaco, keeper Anthony Lopes went to Angers, and all hopes now lie with youngsters like Leroux, Tati, and Lepenant.
The first transfer window throws you into the deep end. Scouting is quicker and more accurate, but at a steep price: players now have more agency about their careers. That means a midfielder I desperately need who's currently in a big English team won't want to move to a struggling second-tier French outfit. On top of that, some clubs won't negotiate with you, full stop, so you have to do some prying with release clauses whenever available.
