New Trump Tariffs Could Make Gaming Even More Expensive

New Trump Tariffs Could Make Gaming Even More Expensive

United States President Donald Trump and his administration are reportedly considering a round of tariffs on semiconductors, which could drive up the costs of several products such as video game systems. In the past, video game systems would go down in price over time, as parts became cheaper. However, things have changed over the current console generation, as video game companies have been forced to compete during a global chip shortage.

Throughout the current console generation, consumers have seen prices steadily increase. Nintendo Switch 2 has seen a price increase just over a year after the system's release, while the prices for PlayStation and Xbox consoles continue to rise more than six years after launch. As a result, gaming has become far less affordable for many consumers.

According to a report from Politico, a new set of tariffs being considered by the Trump administration would be placed on semiconductors, as well as several other items that use them. This means U.S. consumers could be forced to pay more for gaming consoles, laptops, and other items. The report claims that companies that invest in manufacturing semiconductors in America could be subject to exceptions. However, the move is already seeing pushback from tech companies, as the global chip shortage is already leading to price increases.

The global chip shortage is a result of heavy AI investment and the building of data centers. Companies like Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo are trying to compete, but demand far exceeds the current supply. The Trump administration wants to see semiconductors manufactured locally, and the tariffs are an attempt to force companies to do so in America, rather than in countries like Malaysia, South Korea, and Taiwan. Those countries already have the infrastructure in place, and the cost and time required would make it difficult for companies to simply shift production to the U.S.

Gamers already have negative opinions on the use of AI, and rising costs of consoles and PC components are leading to even more frustration; many see this as an unwanted technology that's making things more expensive. However, the proposed tariffs from the Trump administration are even seeing pushback from AI advocates. Many in the tech industry are already arguing that increased prices from tariffs could make it more difficult for companies based in the U.S. to compete with AI demands. The tech industry has heavily invested in AI over the last few years, and the tariffs would make it more expensive to build the necessary data centers.

The increasing cost of semiconductors comes at a time when companies like Sony and Microsoft are trying to make plans for the next console generation. While Sony has only broadly addressed its plans for the PS6, Microsoft has frequently discussed Helix, the codename for the next-generation Xbox. As semiconductor demands and costs grow, it could result in companies deciding to delay plans for releasing these new consoles, and result in prohibitively high prices when they finally do arrive on the market.
