Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave just launched to strong reviews, with most critics calling it a confident return and one of the most polished entries the series has seen to date, as well as the first on Nintendo's 4K-capable Switch 2. Now, thanks to Reddit user TimYoungJik, we know that the entire game is surprisingly playable with a single Joy-Con in Joy-Con mouse mode.
For players who rely on one-handed setups, or simply prefer lighter controllers, it's a very welcome surprise. There aren't many examples, but I love when a game supports single Joy-Con play because it makes long sessions easier without swapping between accessories and Pro Controllers. Fortune’s Weave offering that flexibility is a meaningful option for anyone who can even slightly benefit from enjoying the game more as a result.
TimYoungJik tested the setup during their playthrough on Cai’s route and spent several hours using only the right Joy-Con. He reports that tactical battles, dungeons, dialogue, and town exploration all worked without major hurdles. The game’s tutorial explains the basics of mouse mode, but several important functions only appear when pressing X to expand the control guide.
In mouse mode, the right stick moves your character, and pressing it resets the camera. Holding the left mouse click lets you sprint, and in dungeons it triggers an attack first before transitioning into a sprint. The same input also fast-forwards combat animations. Moving the stick during dialogue opens the history log, and pressing any face button brings up the Adventure Guide. Pushing the stick left or right switches between submenus.
Perhaps unsurprisingly for such a unique mode, some quirks were reported. Pressing up or down on the stick in menus causes the cursor to jump straight between the top and bottom items. Fast travel cannot be opened directly because the shortcut is tied to the d-pad, though it can still be accessed through the pause menu. Cai’s Third Eye ability cannot be used in dungeons without ZL, and switching between the local and world map requires the L button.
It's suggested, then, to remap the GameChat button to act as L. He notes that players may be able to remap a face button to function as ZL, though he did not test whether this interferes with other controls. The X button should not be remapped, since it toggles dialogue auto advance.
The only limitation that really sours the experience for me and a lot of others, is that the game will not start unless the left Joy-Con is powered on and paired. Removing it and trying to play with only the right Joy-Con leaves the game stuck on the controller connection screen. It's understandable from a design standpoint, but still an annoying restriction that hopefully can be patched out in the future.
Even with these quirks, the setup seems to work smoothly across multiple gameplay sections. Using a stick alongside mouse controls does come across as unnatural at first, but becomes intuitive over time to the point that it's hard for me to go back. Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave may not have been designed for this play style, but it's implemented well enough to make the discovery worth sharing with those who find it more comfortable.
