Officially, support for Multi Frame Generation within Nvidia’s DLSS technology pack is limited to its RTX 50 series GPUs, but modders have now brought the frame rate-boosting technology to older RTX 30 cards.

The news of modders bringing unofficial DLSS 5 neural rendering technology to older GPUs, stretching back to the RTX 30 series, may have stolen the spotlight over the last couple of weeks, but one older DLSS feature has remained unsupported on some ageing Nvidia cards - until now.

A new download on GitHub called DLSSG SM86 lets gamers with RTX 30 series cards utilise Multi Frame Generation, a feature officially exclusive to RTX 50 series GPUs. This modification now allows for frame rate boosts on these cards that were never officially possible, and it works by adding two extra files to a supported game's executable folder. This addition is enough to make frame generation options appear within a game's graphics settings, with support for 2x, 3x and 4x multipliers.

Various YouTube videos are already showing the graphics hack in action, with the frame rate-boosting technology appearing to work just as Nvidia intended it to on newer hardware. The example below, running Cyberpunk 2077 on an RTX 3080, is particularly convincing. Nvidia doesn't endorse the modification, of course, but given how straightforward the fix appears to be, it does raise the question of why the company hasn't brought this support to RTX 30 cards officially - and also the RTX 40 series, which officially supports standard frame generation but not multi frame generation.

Although unofficial, the modification is a welcome addition, particularly with many PC gamers holding onto their graphics cards for longer as prices of the newest GPUs keep climbing. According to a recent Steam hardware survey, the five-year-old RTX 3060 remains the most popular GPU on the platform, so this modification should find no shortage of takers.
