Baldur's Gate 3 is made up of three acts, but they are absolutely not spread out equally. Act 1 is huge, Act 2 is much more contained, and then Act 3 make up about half of your playthrough. This disparity has been a point of contention for some time, and now, something has been done to address it.
Act 2 Expansion - Custom Campaign is a new mod from Nexus Mods user SquallyDaBeanz. It adds an entirely new region to Act 2, which is usually just made up of one region and several interiors. This region is populated with new NPCs, quests, and encounters, giving us a custom campaign that fits in with the main story, giving us more to do before we head off to Baldur's Gate.
The story surrounding the new area takes place after the curse is lifted on the Shadow-Cursed Lands. So, if you've done that, you can venture to this new area and start this custom campaign. It won't end Act 2, but you can choose to start on the road to Baldur's Gate from here, once you're done with the new content.
"The main goal of the project is to give players a whole new region to experience that is similar in scope to the Act 1 Wilderness," the mod's description reads. "This mod focuses mainly on exploration and combat designed for mid-to-high level (8-10) parties."
While there are new NPCs to chat to, they are unvoiced. That's actually a relief, given how many mods use generative AI voice work now.
The Act 2 exit that would normally take you to Baldur's Gate is now the road you take to get to the Chionthar Wilds, so you shouldn't miss it. The mod author doesn't give away many story details here, but we know there will be more than 30 combat encounters, so there's clearly much to uncover.
This is far from the first custom campaign to be released for Baldur's Gate 3. Ever since Larian released official mod support, we've seen the Astarion-themed A Dream of Silence and another inspired by Curse of Strahd. There's also the highly anticipated Path to Menzoberranzan, which is so huge that there's a whole team working on it.
