The action-adventure genre is vast. Games like the Uncharted series, God of War, or even Okami come to a lot of gamers' minds, but the sheer popularity of the genre also means there are plenty of games that are eventually forgotten. Whether it's a thought-provoking narrative or filled with fun-loving gameplay, each action-adventure game has its own unique spin on the genre.
Not all of them end up being heavy-hitters that evolve into long-running franchises like Uncharted, though. Many of them launch without making much of a splash, despite being strong games. After several decades' worth of gaming, a lot of titles fall into that category, but there are some specific ones that deserve fresh attention.
I know, the title's pretty ironic, but that's not why the game is on this list. Remember Me was a modest 2013 action-adventure game from Capcom, and it may have fared better if it had launched during a different time, releasing just days before titles like Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Company of Heroes 2, and a little game called The Last of Us. The story takes place in the cyberpunk-infused Neo-Paris and follows protagonist Nilin.
Nilin's memories have been erased by an evil corporation, which are a staple of the cyberpunk genre. This leads her on a journey to discover her true self. In this dystopian world, a person's memories are bought and sold, which is a pretty trippy concept. Nilin is a memory hunter who enters her targets' minds and "remixes" their memories and thoughts.
This will immediately sound familiar to those who remember Cyberpunk 2077's Braindance sequences. Braindances aren't every Cyberpunk 2077's fan's cup of tea, but Remember Me's take on a dystopian memory-fueled future is underappreciated.
The Saboteur is also an action-adventure game set in the beautiful city of Paris, except this time around, the story takes place in the 1940s, right in the middle of World War 2. There are plenty of World War 2 games out there, but The Saboteur is a unique and charming take on this moment in history.
Players take on the role of Sean Devlin, an Irish racecar mechanic working with the French Resistance to take down the German forces in Paris. Nazi Colonel Kurt Dierker is Sean's main target, as he's responsible for the murder of Sean's best friend.
Because of its open-world formula, The Saboteur turns Paris into a wild playground. Between stealthy takedowns of Nazis, exploring historical landmarks, and driving through the streets of Paris, The Saboteur is a World Wars 2 game with a hint of GTA in its DNA.
