About halfway through my time with Gears of War: E-Day's campaign, I had a realization: this is Gears of War's Halo: Reach.
I want to make it clear that I don't mean that in a derogatory way; Reach is far and away my favorite Halo game. It's just the nature of the story being told. Both are prequels with depressing plots where our protagonists ultimately don't win. Sure, Marcus and Dom escape the events of Emergence Day alive (spoiler, I guess, but they are, you know, very much alive in the original Gears of War games), but at what cost?
That's the story E-Day tells. The Pendulum Wars are over, but what's the damage? How many lives were needlessly lost? How do we move on? And how much does the attempted extinction of the human race by the Locust affect everything?
It all adds up to an excellent story that stands toe-to-toe with the original Gears trilogy; provided you can look past some of its design flaws, particularly when it comes to its open-world moments.
For those unfamiliar with the Gears of War timeline, Emergence Day marks the moment when the Locust (quite literally) emerge from underneath the planet's surface and wipe out 25% of the human population. To make matters worse, Emergence Day takes place six weeks after the conclusion of the Pendulum Wars, an 80-year global conflict centered around the fight for imulsion energy resources.
Right as Sera's people are looking to finally get a sense of peace, their entire world is destroyed. Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago are out having drinks and ready to move on with their lives when the invasion begins, and they're thrust back into combat. It's a moment that may not land for newcomers to the franchise, but for veterans, it certainly hits home. You know the turmoil they're going to endure over the next decade-plus. There's a lot of grief and distress on display here, and it's nice to see the characters not afraid to show some emotion. You feel the anguish, the misery, and the desperation the humans of Sera go through, especially our main cast of characters.
