CA plans to reinstate the original Total War Shogun 2 as the strategy game’s new remaster faces overwhelmingly negative Steam reviews.
Creative Assembly has just announced that it will be removing the Total War Shogun 2 Complete Edition from sale for the time being. The updated and overhauled remaster of the beloved 2011 original has been blasted by players since its launch on Tuesday October 13, and currently sits at just 17% positive reviews on Steam. The developer plans to investigate community concerns to bring the Complete Edition up to "the quality standards players expect," and says that it will be reinstating the old version of Shogun 2 during this time.
Total War Shogun 2 was a fantastic entry in the long-running series of historical strategy games, and giving it a fresh coat of paint seemed like an easy win for Creative Assembly. Along with support for 1440p and 4K UI scaling, it promised modernized controls, over 50 newly playable minor factions, fresh cutscenes, full Japanese and Chinese voice acting and text, and integrated mod support. Unfortunately, the response so far has been decidedly downcast.
First is the price tag. The Complete Edition costs $39.99 / £34.99, and while you can get a 75% discount if you already own the original, bringing it down to $9.99 / £8.75, many user reviews express that it feels more like a free update than a full, paid remaster. Adding insult to injury is that you can no longer buy the old game on Steam since the launch of the new version, although that's now set to change.
Among the rest of the complaints, players report bugs from the old game that haven't been fixed, along with new issues that have arisen in the Complete Edition, and poor optimization that is causing underwhelming performance and crashes for many users.
The new unit cards have also been heavily criticized, with players accusing the designs of feeling "AI-generated." Creative Assembly and development partner Mataboo, which worked on the remaster, have not listed any generative AI use as part of the game's development.
"We're aware that Total War Shogun 2 Complete Edition has fallen short of both your expectations and our own standards," CA writes. "We've seen your feedback, comments, and reviews. We agree that the current experience is not where it needs to be. As a result, we are working with platform holders to remove the game from sale and to reinstate the original game while we investigate the issues. Existing owners will still be able to access and play the game."
The team says it is "working closely with our development partner to identify the causes of these problems, deliver improvements, and ensure Shogun 2 Complete Edition meets the quality standards players expect from Total War." No further timeline has been given for now on when we might expect it to return to Steam.
