Furious may have just ended its first season, but viewers looking for another tense, edge-of-your-seat thriller with the same combination of mystery, complicated characters, and revenge have plenty of other options. Hulu's latest show follows Emmy Rossum's FBI Agent Alice Black as she investigates a female serial killer named Catherine. With the help of FBI Agent Nora Washington and NYPD officer Danny Kelly, the investigation uncovers dark secrets and traumatic pasts while blurring the lines between hero and villain.
Furious doesn't ask the audience who's good or who's bad, but instead challenges viewers to understand the circumstances that shaped them. The nail-biting, gut-wrenching finale aired on August 31, and fortunately, there are plenty of great thriller movies that explore similar territory. Before there was Furious, there was Black Widow. For anyone who enjoyed Alice's strange fascination with Catherine, and the way the two leads understood each other as victims, the original movie provides an interesting earlier version of that kind of dynamic. The narrative core is understandably similar, which means it might not be the most rewarding next watch for Furious fans.
The Silence of the Lambs follows FBI trainee Clarice Sterling as she attempts to catch a serial killer known only as "Buffalo Bill." His murders have left the FBI desperate for answers, so in an attempt to understand the criminal's mind, Clarice turns to another imprisoned killer for help. Her cat-and-mouse game with Hannibal Lecter is one of cinema's most iconic and compelling dynamics, combining horror, mystery, and psychological drama into an incredibly tense viewing experience.
Both Furious and The Silence of the Lambs place a female investigator against a dangerous killer, but the similarities become more interesting when considering the characters, not just the basic premise. Furious complicates the classic cop-vs-criminal formula because Catherine forms a deep psychological bond with Alice, much like Clarice bonds with Hannibal Lecter. In both projects, the line between hero and villain gets increasingly blurred while the agents' past vulnerabilities are gradually uncovered. For anyone who loved the suspense and investigation in Furious, The Silence of the Lambs is the best next watch.
