Candy Crush Saga is one of the most ubiquitous names in mobile gaming today, and has been for well over a decade now. It has been a consistent moneymaker and attention-grabber for its development studio, Swedish company King, and by extension, its parent company, Activision Blizzard, which is itself a subsidiary of Microsoft. It's so successful, King effectively hasn't needed to make any other games since its launch.
Given the game’s consistent success, it stands to reason the studio and its parents would be amenable to giving the staff whatever they need, but apparently, that hasn’t been the case.
Unionized employees at King have been trying to strike a new collective agreement with the studio and its parents for about a year now, and as of today, negotiations seem to have fallen through. As a result of this, the workers have announced that, should a deal not be reached by September 25, all staff members will be standing up from their desks and officially going on strike until their demands are met.
This strike announcement has drawn words of support from other Swedish workers unions, who have announced sympathy strike action.
The workers at King are represented by the Swedish workers union Unionen, which posted an announcement on the looming strike on its website. According to Unionen, the unionized employees at King have been heavily engaged in the bargaining process, with a large portion of the studio’s employees being members of Unionen.
As for what they want, their primary goals are a new agreement that gives them stronger security in their jobs, as well as a greater degree of influence over the terms and conditions of their workplace.
