Thanks to an extensive new mod, Transport Fever 3 now has multiplayer, allowing to you co-operate or compete head-to-head with your friends.
In many ways, the city builder genre feels somewhat solitary. While there's enjoyment in being able to quietly build your own metropolis and watch the world go by, the idea of being able to build a blossoming city with your friends is truly tempting. Imagine having to manage cash coming out of the same pot to ensure you don't bankrupt yourselves or, if you're competitive like me, you could challenge your pals to see whose city is the most-approved-of (what can I say, I'm a toxic League of Legends player). The issue is: Transport Fever 3 - and other city builders like it - doesn't offer multiplayer.
Enter MPFever, a new mod by 'dkdknight' and their fellow devs. As it says on the tin, MPFever adds co-op multiplayer to Transport Fever 3, allowing you to play the game together on separate PCs, either over the internet or via a local network.
You'll both be playing in the same world at the same time, sharing a singular company and bank account. One of you can plan while the other builds, and you'll share absolutely everything, from vehicles to roads to public transport. Every action is applied simultaneously, and you'll be able to see what your friends are building, and where.
You can, however, branch off on your own and set up a new company. From here, you can compete with your pals over satisfaction ratings and general city aesthetics (who doesn't want to brag about having the prettiest city?), and you can transfer cash back and forth as you barter. If the pot drains, you'll go bankrupt, and your company will be auctioned off to the highest (or lowest) bidder. Keep an eye on your bank balance, then, it's pretty important.
MPFever also allows you to host your own, independent server with your friends, letting your world run in the background. You can set passwords and player limits, and it'll happily run itself, fixing any crashes or errors autonomously.
MPFever is easy to set up and integrates natively into Steam, meaning you can send and receive invites to play via Valve's platform. It also compares worlds every ten seconds, meaning you'll consistently match up with your pals, and there's a chat function to compare notes as you go.
You can download MPFever right here, but dkdknight stresses that the mod is still in active development, and encourages you to keep your files backed up. You also need to have the same mods and game version installed.
