The 20th anniversary celebrations aren’t ending for Company of Heroes, with the 3.0 update adding new maps, game modes, and changes to AI.
Company of Heroes 3 and Final Stand are set to receive major updates, with additions that touch nearly every aspect of the RTS game. Seen as a continuation of CoH's 20th anniversary, the 3.0 update adds new maps, weather effects, improvements to AI opponents, and a new three-player mode for the Final Stand expandalone game mode.
I enjoyed Final Stand quite a lot when it launched. A new take on an old formula; its roguelike elements and wave defence grabbed me from the get-go, and now I can rope in two friends with the new three-player game mode. There's also a bunch of new abilities, passives, and enemies for me to get stuck into.
The Company of Heroes 3 3.0 update also adds five new maps to the base game, catering to all types of matches, from 1v1 slugfests to the all-out chaos of 4v4 matches. Fans of Langres, Mignano Summit Winter, and Rapido River Crossed are also in for a treat, as those maps have had a refresh, bringing in some of the new visual and environmental enhancements.
The AI updates are particularly fascinating, with a new under-the-hood 'Combat Rating' calculation going on with the computer-controlled opposition at all times. This reportedly enables smarter decisions in battle and more natural-feeling retreat behavior when things aren't going quite their way.
It's a good time to be a Company of Heroes fan, and the effort that's gone into the 20th anniversary of the series hasn't gone unnoticed. It doesn't quite end there, either, as Relic is promising continued support and a ton of new content going forward.
