Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has shut down speculation about Microsoft potentially selling its gaming business, insisting that Xbox is “not for sale.”
Questions about Xbox’s future have continued following Sharma’s appointment as CEO and a major restructuring of Microsoft’s gaming division. Nearly 2,000 Xbox employees have already been cut, while studios have exited the company or faced closure and several projects have been canceled.
However, Sharma has now directly addressed suggestions that Microsoft could eventually look to sell Xbox.
Speaking to The New York Times, Sharma gave a definitive response when asked about the possibility of Microsoft selling its gaming business.
“We will do whatever it takes to set the company up for success, and we will look at the right partnerships, the right operating model and everything needed to achieve that.”
The comments follow reports that Microsoft had considered several potential changes to the structure of Xbox. The Information previously reported that Microsoft had not ruled out making Xbox a wholly-owned subsidiary, which could potentially allow the business to operate as a joint venture with other partners.
The New York Times also raised the possibility of Xbox eventually being spun off into an independent company that would continue working with Microsoft, but Sharma appeared to play down that prospect as well.
“We’ve got a long way to go with Microsoft, and we’re going to take the long-term view,” she said.
