No Man’s Sky update, Cosmos, overhauls space, adding salvage operations, orbital station ownership, and some possible biohazard threats.
It's a bit vague, saying No Man's Sky is now overhauling *waves hand* space, but after everything I've seen Hello Games achieve in the past ten years, I'm hardly surprised. The survival game has turned its transformative eye to the vast expanse, adding orbital bases, hulking wrecks, and the ability to own a space station.
The Cosmos update coincides with the game's tenth anniversary, and might actually be its biggest yet, considering the size of space and all. The call to arms for Cosmos is: "In most sci-fi games, space is just an empty void. With Cosmos we wondered - can we make space feel truly alive?"
So rather than a void between planets, players can now exist in space in a way they couldn't before. You can salvage huge wrecks, fight off potential alien threats on said wrecks, build an orbital base… this appears to be the tip of the proverbial iceberg, too. Creating a spacefaring community isn't out of the question, and with the new star map addition, you can pinpoint places to go and things to see as you enter a new system.
No Man's Sky always seems to go above and beyond - not content with hitting the bar, it constantly strives for better - strives for more. It's a game that always seems to give players something they didn't know they wanted, and the Cosmos update is just another example of that. In addition to all this space stuff, No Man's Sky is adding a cute expedition named "Our Journey Continues!" which acts as a kind of museum tour through each of its 40(!) major updates since launch.
