When discussing the cozy genre, two names that are almost always going to come up are The Sims and Stardew Valley. The former has been around for decades, thriving due to its immensely satisfying life management mechanics. The latter offers a charming pixel art style and relaxing farming mechanics that have been mimicked by countless indie games. Both of these IPs are downright beloved, so it’s safe to assume that the upcoming Steam game Mayday: The Survival Island will be a hit, as it cleverly combines both of them into a single experience.
However, the Sims game that Steam’s Mayday resembles isn’t a traditional Sims game where players trap their civilians in pools and build houses. Instead, it’s taking inspiration from one of The Sims franchise’s many spin-offs, The Sims 2: Castaway. Released in 2007, this console spin-off of the series saw players creating up to six Sims and tasked them with keeping these characters alive on a series of uncharted islands. More linear and quest-based than traditional Sims releases, players had to manage their characters’ needs, gather resources, and eventually escape the island. It also offered direct control over the player-made characters, a trait that Mayday: The Survival Island will share. With a look and tasks that resemble Stardew Valley, as well as a setting and concept that’s comparable to The Sims 2: Castaway, this game seems like a must-watch for cozy gamers.

After a mysterious crash, you awaken alone on a strange island. Survive by hunting, farming, and crafting, then explore a vast archipelago filled with secrets, ancient ruins, and magical totems. Build your base, uncover the truth, and escape—if you can.
Mayday: The Survival Island feels like a more expansive version of Sims 2: Castaway in terms of its premise. In that cult classic Sims title, players had four different islands to guide their characters through: shipwreck, airplane, volcano, and crystal. As they’d progress through these islands, they’d gather materials to build campfires, shelters, and more, with befriending animals being another possibility. And while Mayday: The Survival Island has players hunting creatures instead of working alongside them, the rest of these ideas apply. Additionally, players have 6 times the number of islands to explore, with 24 total locations with distinct looks and challenges. Unique treasures, threats, and biomes are all promised, with everything from “sun-bleached beaches” to “ancient cemeteries” available.
As players hunt, gather, and uncover treasure within these biomes, they’ll also be piecing together a hidden narrative. As survivors go about their days, they’ll apparently be watched by remnants of a lost civilization, with the story of the island’s old residents being unveiled piece by piece. Players will learn what caused their crash, whether escape is possible, and more as they do everything from gather food to battle “powerful guardians.” Assuming that escape is actually possible, which does seem to be the case, this is another key similarity to Castaway. In that Sims spin-off, players had two methods of escape to work toward: building a boat or constructing a radio to send out an SOS. Whether one of these methods is used for the hypothetical escape in Mayday, or a different approach is taken, remains to be seen. Altogether it may be a loose connection, but it's hard not to see this game like that Sims spin-off.

However, while The Sims 2: Castaway had a “stranded on an island and forced to survive” premise, everything else about Mayday: The Survival Island resembles Stardew Valley. Visually, it boasts a pixel art style (albeit a bit more detailed) and a top-down camera perspective. Mechanically, players can expect the same level of freedom as Stardew Valley. They do not have to be wary of tight deadlines or game over screens, as they can move through the story or ignore it and relax whenever they please. There are “no forced objectives or linear paths,” with meaningful discoveries instead being sprinkled throughout all the gameplay elements.
