Epic Games Store New Launcher Is Entirely AI Vibecoded

Epic has launched a preview version of its completely rebuilt Epic Games Store Launcher, and the tone of the announcement makes it impossible not to raise an eyebrow. The announcement post opens by joking that “Programming is hard,” before claiming the company “vibecoded” the new launcher into existence. It is not often that a storefront gets rebuilt from scratch, but Epic’s framing makes the whole thing feel more like a troll than a serious attempt to fix a client that has been slow, clunky, and frustrating for years.

Epic emphasises in its messaging that this is just a preview. The launcher is as claims; lighter on resources, a few seconds faster, and has a responsive UI. But, even ignoring the issues with how it was made, those changes are marginal, and the launcher is still missing many of the features that need to be in the final version. The studio says player response from this phase will directly shape the finished launcher, and it all highlights how Epic desperately relies on users and their usually negative feedback.

Alongside revealing the new launcher, Epic also took the chance to fire a potshot at Steam, noting that it's "faster than the other guy", which frankly just comes off as sad. Having checked out the launcher, I found that cold starts are quicker, overall navigation through the store has been updated, and background usage is indeed lower.

Even with these improvements, it is hard to ignore that the Epic Games Launcher is still the only reliable way to access Unreal Engine 5 assets, plug‑ins, updates, and development tools. Developers are forced to depend on it, so the idea that this rebuild was “vibecoded” does not inspire confidence for one of gaming's biggest studios.

The only positive from this situation is that the announcement confirmed that Fortnite will be coming to Linux. Even that's vibecoded, though, so it's not exactly worth celebrating.

With Tim Sweeney pushing AI as a major part of Epic’s future, this launcher may be the start of an Epic that looks very different from the one we know today, with games' primary talent taking a back seat to AI‑driven tools. The new launcher is a work‑in‑progress wrapped in marketing language, and right now, it feels more like Epic trying to convince everyone it has reinvented the wheel by typing a few sentences into a prompt box.
