Nintendo's September Direct brought a surprising amount of new game reveals for how short notice the stream was announced. While there was no shortage of exciting ports, Switch 2 updates, and even several first-party releases for franchises like Metroid and Kirby, one of the most shocking reveals was for none other than Danganronpa 2x2.
While it didn't have the same blockbuster reveals as Nintendo's first-party reveals, the trailer for Spike Chunsoft's upcoming remake not only offered an official release date to look forward to, but also confirmed one incredibly confusing leak that has been spreading through the community over the past few weeks.
During NintendoAmerica's Direct stream on YouTube, fans can not only finally mark down a release date of Danganronpa 2x2 coming January 14, 2026, on their calendars, but also added even more fuel to the remake's hype by officially showing off the character fans have comedically nicknamed "John Danganronpa."
Initially revealed in leaked cover art and poster material for Danganronpa 2x2's release, the trailer puts the mysterious new character front and center for several in-game cutscenes. Even having a line during a case saying, "Monokuma, I demand we put the class trial on hold," the trailer confirmed that they are clearly a part of the main cast and not simply some throwaway side character.
The footage also shut down several popular fan theories that the character could be from Danganronpa V3 or even Ryota Mitarai from the Danganronpa anime brought into the game, with several distinct features like a mole, hair color, eye color, and an outfit that we haven't seen anywhere else in the series.
While it remains to be seen if the unnamed character will be replacing one of the current 16 students or bring the number to a total of 17 in the Slayhem mode, the new class member isn't the only thing the new trailer confirmed either.
Several of the trial premises, weapons, and other gameplay details coming in the new Slayhem story mode were also revealed, with the first case seemingly taking place on a large submarine, a trial room burning down, a group-based trial dynamic, and teasing new "Slayhem Items" in the form of weapons or cards that likely offer new motives and murder methods we haven't seen before.
Danganronpa 2x2's trailer also confirmed the addition of several new and returning mechanics, like the Scrum Debate from Danganronpa V3
