Any child of the 90s can sing endless praises of the SNES, from its majorly upgraded hardware over the NES to its improved 12-button controller. However, one of my absolute favorite aspects of the SNES, in terms of both hardware and software, is its eighth graphical rendering mode, better known by its legendary moniker, Mode 7.

With the power of Mode 7, the SNES could take flat sprite sheets or images and freely scroll and scale them in three dimensions, creating a sort of pseudo-3D effect. It allowed for some really incredible graphical design back in the day, and the aesthetic of Mode 7 is so iconic, it’s still deliberately invoked in a lot of retro-styled games to this day, as it should be. Now, I could talk all day about what made Mode 7 the hottest thing since French bread, but as the old saying goes, seeing is believing. In honor of this classic advancement in graphical technology, let’s highlight some of the standout uses of Mode 7 on the SNES, whether games only used it a couple of times or built their entire core loops around it.

Secret of Mana Flammie

As far back as the original Dragon Quest, world maps have been a core element of the JRPG experience. You’re supposed to be on a massive, globe-trotting adventure, after all, so seeing your character march around on a zoomed-out landmass definitely helps to drive that sense of scale home. Naturally, most JRPGs on the SNES used the same approach to world maps, though one in particular, Secret of Mana, put an extra Mode 7-powered spin on it.

Late in the course of the game’s story, Randi and company come across an orphaned dragonling, rescuing and adopting it. This dragon, Flammie, becomes the party’s de facto means of long-distance transport, allowing you to hop aboard when summoned. When you take to the map aboard Flammie, the entire world is rendered in Mode 7, rapidly scrolling beneath you as you fly to and fro. While not the only use of Mode 7 in this game, you can fly while looking directly forward, or while looking down, which helps to convey just how high up you are and how fast you’re moving compared to having a sprite over a regular, stationary map.

Besides being a simple, yet addictive JRPG, the original version of Super Mario RPG released in 1996 was a pretty graphically-impressive title, full of fully-modeled enemies and fairly elaborate animations for Mario and his party members. Naturally, there was some Mode 7 in the mix as well, with the tech seeing consistent use as part of the transitions between map screens. However, the most elaborate Mode 7-powered moment in the game came about in the mineshafts of Moleville Mountain.

After defeating Punchinello in the mines and tracking down Dyna and Mite, Mario and company hop aboard an old mine cart to get the heck outta dodge. The minecart tracks are a massive, twisting network of paths, all of which are rendered using Mode 7. It’s quite a hectic ride, requiring you to turn your cart on a dime to stay on the tracks and avoid flying off them, with the speed at which you turn really pushing the SNES’s rendering capabilities to the max.
