Wizards of the Coast is not having a fun time with its latest Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair drop, The Zeta Set. The product has faced multiple controversies since its announcement, but the launch was a chance to show that interest and demand outweighed the negativity.
Well, this isn't quite how it went down. The demand was there for sure, but around 40 minutes into the sale, a technical issue forced Wizards of the Coast to temporarily pull The Zeta Set from sale, with players told to sit in the queue and continue waiting for when it came back online. This would take about 80 minutes, and when it was finally back on sale, players' queue times increased, and there was only enough stock to support about five minutes of sales.
The whole experience of trying to buy The Zeta Set was such a letdown that Wizards of the Coast felt compelled to release a statement in which it branded the launch "a disaster."
Whether it was the choice of reprints, the lack of artist credits, the booster pack sales approach, or the idea of a set that can't reasonably be completed due to purchase limits, The Zeta Set had plenty of hurdles to clear before it even made it to launch day.
The product proved to be quite unpopular with large portions of the Magic fanbase for the above reasons, but as the cherry on top of the controversial cake, The Zeta Set's launch was also extremely problematic.
Going on sale at 9 am PT, it took around 40 minutes for "technical issues" to cause Wizards to pause the sale, with the announcement made via the Secret Lair social media channels.
Players were told to stay in the queue to keep their place as Wizards worked to fix the problem, but this would end up taking approximately 80 minutes. When The Zeta Set was put back on sale, players reported their queue times doubling or being kicked out entirely.
To compound the disappointment, The Zeta Set only lasted a further five minutes before the remaining stock in the US, UK, and EU was completely sold out.
