Hunter x Hunter returned to us in June 2026 when Weekly Shonen Jump finally published chapter 411 after over a year and a half of waiting. Since then, the story has progressed tremendously, and we have seen the release of 9 new chapters, bringing us to the finale of this batch, Hunter x Hunter chapter 420. This new chapter officially marked the beginning of the new hiatus, and while that is sad, the work pushed out by Yoshihiro Togashi makes up for the long wait.
Released on September 6, 2026, Hunter x Hunter chapter 420 continued the exciting Succession Contest arc started by Togashi over a decade ago, and finally, after almost two years, Hisoka makes a return. Though brief, Hisoka was seen strutting his stuff as he overpowered one of the most hyped up antagonists of this arc — Tserriednich Hui Guo Rou. We can’t wait to see what else Hisoka does when the manga inevitably returns with a new batch of chapters.
Hisoka has always been a fan favorite character in the Hunter x Hunter story. While the manga started with chapter 1 on March 2, 1998, in Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #14, Hisoka himself only made an appearance later during the events of the Hunter Exam arc, in chapter 5, released on March 30, 2026, in WSJ Issue #18. Ever since his debut, he has stolen the spotlight. Hisoka's role in the story has only grown ever since, with major highlights during arcs like York New City, Greed Island, and the 13th Chairman Election arcs.
Since the anime ended in 2014, Hisoka’s character hasn’t stagnated at all. He has been a huge part of the Succession Contest Arc, and he initially stole the show with Chrollo when their long-fated battle commenced in chapter 351. After his loss, Hisoka faced death, but as he reawakened, he went on to add tremendously to the story on the Black Whale.
After Hisoka's battle with Chrollo, he laid low, and fans didn't get to see him for quite some time. In Hunter x Hunter Chapter 405, however, he finally makes a return. Previously, fans had thought Hisoka had returned, but that was only a disguise by Bonolenov, while the real Hisoka was busy gambling.
HxH chapter 405, released back on November 4, 2024, in WSJ Issue #49, gave us a glimpse of him, but it was short-lived as the manga went on a hiatus once more in December 2024. As the manga of HxH had approached its end, fans thought we wouldn’t get to see Hisoka again. Togashi, however, surprised us all in more ways than one. Hisoka officially returned in Hunter x Hunter chapter 420, released on September 7, 2026, in WSJ Issue #41. This marks almost two years since his last appearance.
More than anything, it’s the manner of his return that shocked us all. Over the last few chapters, Tserriednich was the focus of the Hunter x Hunter manga. After tricking Benjamin, he escaped using his future-seeing powers. While he was able to outsmart everyone and play things according to his plan, he ran into none other than Hisoka. As expected, Hisoka was able to subdue Tserriednich easily, and while the latter was able to escape, he had a dreadful feeling that Hisoka was able to sense his Nen Beast. Staying any longer in Hisoka's presence could’ve marked his death.
We were all excited to see Hisoka return. After all, he is Togashi’s joker card, and whenever he is involved, something exciting comes out of it. Anime-only fans have no idea how strong Hisoka currently is in the manga compared to his anime counterpart. Indeed, while Hisoka has always been quite strong, he has now reached new heights of power. His new power-up traces back to the fated battle against Chrollo, which ran from chapter 351 to chapter 357. In this battle, Chrollo came out victorious due to prep time and thanks to the Nen abilities of the Spiders. At the end of this clash, Chrollo ended up killing Hisoka.
