Humankind 2 should have left fans thinking about building empires and rewriting history. Instead, much of the conversation quickly shifted to many slamming its announcement trailer, claiming it was “AI slop,” forcing the devs to speak out.
Gamescom 2026 began with Opening Night Live on August 25, bringing a packed showcase filled with major announcements and new footage, including reveals for The Witcher 3 Remastered, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, Lego Skylines, Rainbow Six Tactics, and more.
Among the mix was Humankind 2, one of the biggest strategy reveals of the show. Like the original Humankind, the sequel is a historical turn-based 4X strategy game that lets players shape their own civilization across multiple eras.
This time, it’ll also introduce deeper cultural progression, enhanced visuals, a redesigned interface, and a climate system capable of changing the map over time. However, it was the live-action reveal trailer rather than the game itself that immediately saw backlash.
The trailer follows human history through the eyes of newborn babies, moving between scenes featuring prehistoric people, Vikings, settlers, and astronauts. Its unusual perspective, rapid cuts, and surreal visuals led some viewers to assume generative AI had been used in its production.
“AI slop?” one person asked beneath the game’s announcement post on X. “Trash AI trailer, hope it flops,” added another viewer. One echoed the sentiment, writing: “Really was excited for this. But now, not so much. Get this Gen AI trash slop out of here.”

Not everyone believed the trailer had been made with AI. One impressed viewer wrote: “Omg, this is sick. This is like the old Halo acted trailers. So cool.”
