Sony is spending an obscene amount of money to make sure GTA 6 “feels” like an exclusive – and it’s working, apparently.
A new report from The Verge (paywalled) digs into the larger dramas occurring at Xbox of late, including its massive layoffs and restructuring. (I wrote a little bit about how the platform feels like it’s being swallowed by Activision and Bethesda through here.)
But there’s one interesting tidbit in the article that jumped out to me: “Sources at Xbox tell me that GTA 6 pre-orders are heavily skewed toward PS5, ringing yet more alarm bells about the platform.”
This article has been written by Tom Warren, who’s remarkably well-connected with Microsoft, so I believe the reporting. It would be interesting to know just how skewed the pre-orders are, though.
Obviously, Sony has a massive install base advantage over Microsoft anyway, with the PS5 approaching 100 million units sold compared to the Xbox Series X|S’ estimated ~35 million.
Therefore you’d expect a difference of roughly 3:1 in the pre-orders, but I wonder if Sony’s marketing is skewing things even more heavily in the PS5’s favour. That would certainly be enough to set alarm bells ringing in Redmond.
I wonder if we’ll ever get data on this. I’m sure Alinea will put out some predictions, but I can’t see Rockstar commenting on this.
I expect PlayStation’s marketing alliance is going to get even more aggressive once GTA 6’s TV ads start airing closer to release, so I imagine you’re going to see those pre-orders continue to slide even more aggressively in Sony’s favour.
