Ever since Sony announced earlier this year that it would cease production of physical game discs for its PlayStation consoles going forward, it seems like the company has found itself embroiled in one legal battle after another. Even putting the matter of physical discs aside, Sony has been hit with a multitude of lawsuits due to its sales practices, and these lawsuits may be starting to bear financial fruit.
Back in April, a lawsuit was launched against Sony and PlayStation out of California on the grounds that Sony had been monopolizing the market by restricting the sale of third-party games on its platforms, which we just recently saw an example of, as Sony blocked the sale of a popular indie game.
As of this week, the California court has not definitively ruled that Sony broke the law, but regardless, a settlement has been reached, with $7.85 million being allocated to refunds for affected players. If you purchased certain games digitally during a very specific timeframe, you may actually be eligible for a small per-game refund.
When I say “small,” I mean very small, like a few bucks per game, but if you purchased a lot of eligible games during the highlighted timespan, that could add up, though unfortunately, the refund will only be for credit to your PSN wallet.
According to the official settlement management website set up by the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, any United States resident who purchased at least one qualifying digital PlayStation game in the period between April 1, 2019 and December 31, 2023 is eligible for a refund.
Specifically, the settlement is for anyone who purchased a Game Specific Voucher (GSV), or a physical voucher or digital code that enables you to download a specific game from the PlayStation Network store. Anyone who is eligible for a refund will receive their payout automatically. If you wanted to exclude yourself from this ruling, well, the deadline was in July, so you kinda missed the boat there.
