There were a lot of big announcements at BlizzCon 2026, but one of the most exciting of all was definitely Diablo 5. Predecessor Diablo 4 has now been around for three years at this point, and even though Diablo 5 is still a few years out from its debut, knowing what comes next after this current chapter is intriguing. Blizzard made sure to keep the game's finer details under wraps, but the developer revealed a surprising amount about the next Diablo entry. Between the release window and story details, Diablo fans have had a lot to celebrate since the announcement.
When it comes to the inhabitants of Sanctuary, though, there is no room for celebration. After decades of players trying to fight off the forces of the Burning Hells, the Lord of Terror has finally taken over the human realm. This is one of the most eyebrow-raising Diablo 5 story details that Blizzard has unveiled, because it teases one of the franchise's darkest narratives yet. All hope is now seemingly gone, and players will have to face the even tougher challenge of having to save Sanctuary from its fate.
Traditionally, players have always been fighting to push back the apocalypse in the Diablo games. Fighting against evil to save humanity is a classic storytelling trope, and Blizzard is flipping the franchise's staple premise on its head. Blizzard simply revealing a Diablo 5 announcement would have been intriguing enough, but revealing this key piece of the main story is a wild way to generate hype, especially so early in the game's development.
Even though the official Diablo 5 release date hasn't actually been revealed yet, Blizzard confirmed at BlizzCon that the next entry is expected to arrive in Spring 2029 at the earliest. That leaves a lot of time for fans to speculate about what the game has to offer, so Blizzard getting ahead of the rumor mill and confirming certain details is understandable. It builds anticipation and sets a few main expectations, but it also leaves plenty of unanswered questions about what went wrong to make Sanctuary's fall possible in the first place.
Three classes have been confirmed for Diablo 5, two returning and one new. The returning classes are the Demon Hunter and the Monk, while the newcomer is called the Plague Knight.
Diablo 5 takes place a whopping 100 years after Diablo 4, which leaves the latter in a tough narrative spot. Blizzard confirmed that there won't be any major new Diablo 4 expansions between now and Diablo 5. For a lore shake-up as significant as Sanctuary succumbing to the Lord of Terror's rule, one or two new DLCs would have been solid ways to bridge the gap between Diablo 4 and Diablo 5's stories to help paint a clearer picture of how the human realm's defeat was possible.
No more new expansions for Diablo 4 definitely wasn't the news that players were wanting to hear, but the bright side is that Blizzard's seasonal support isn't slowing down any time soon. The game will still get regular seasonal updates that can serve as a replacement for expanding the lore. These updates may not be as significant as full-blown DLCs, but each update could plant further breadcrumbs that set in motion the events that will eventually cause Sanctuary to crumble under the Lord of Terror's power. Most updates will probably be centered around features like the new Diablo 4 Amazon class, but there is at least time between entries to expand the overarching story in increments.
Another key difference in Diablo 5's gameplay is that players are resigned to a life on the road. Conquering strongholds and finding safety in town hubs are no longer part of the equation. Nowhere is safe, so players and their parties have to keep moving to make sure that everyone lives another day. Building a caravan of allies will play an integral part in Diablo 5, and that allows Blizzard to showcase Sanctuary in an all-new way. From vendors to loyal companions, each NPC that players meet along the way could become an important resource.
