Sekiro: No Defeat’s director is begging fans to skip his own trailer because it spoils away a moment he wanted saved for theaters.
FromSoftware’s fandom has spent the past two weeks arguing over whether Hoyoverse’s new game borrowed too much from its bosses, so you’d think a studio actually adapting one of its stories would have an easier ride. Instead, the anime’s own marketing got there first, and its director wasn’t having it.
On September 3, the official Sekiro account dropped a fresh one-minute clip called “The Battle in the Silvergrass Fields,” and it ran straight through Wolf’s fight with Genichiro, right up to the frame the entire promotional campaign had been dancing around.
Director Kenichi Kutsuna posted on X almost immediately. He said a “cinematic reveal that really shouldn’t be spoiled” had gone up without his approval, and he asked anyone who hadn’t watched it yet to wait and see it properly in theaters.
Kutsuna followed up by pinning the blame squarely on co-producer Arch rather than Kadokawa, and he even left a complaint form in his own replies so frustrated fans knew exactly where to send their anger.
It’s a strange, almost self-sabotaging move for a director to make about his own show’s marketing, but it also underlines how much weight this project is carrying. Sekiro: No Defeat began its three-week theatrical run in Japan today, and it marks the first time any FromSoftware game has ever made it to a screen at all, with a global Crunchyroll release still to come later this year.
