Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave Single Save Slot Reasoning Explained

Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave Single Save Slot Reasoning Explained

Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave reviews are out now, and it sounds like a pretty good video game. Our very own Ryan Thompson-Bamsey gave it a perfect score for its vast campaign and tactical combat, while reviews across the board have landed the game a very positive score of 90 on Open Critic. Sounds like there aren't many flaws, but there is one that might annoy the overly cautious.

Confirmed by Nintendo and reviewers, Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave will only give players a single save slot to save their games on, meaning you have to overwrite progress in order to save. For many, that's not the biggest problem, but for those that like to have multiple save slots as backup, it's a pretty big inconvenience.

While Nintendo doesn't seem to be budging on that front, it has now explained its decision to limit players to a single save slot in its latest "Ask the Developer" chat on the official Nintendo website (thanks Nintendo Life).

In the talk, Intelligent Systems director Toshiyuki Kusakihara explained that the team behind Fortune's Weave believed that limiting players to a single save was "the best approach" to the game, while Nintendo's own Kenta Nakanishi, who happens to be the associate producer on Fortune's Weave, gave a bit more of a detailed answer.

"I’m sure there are players who prefer to keep multiple save files, and I’m actually one of those players myself," says Nakanishi. "But because the game system of Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave is built around multiple paths, having separate save files would create system-related complications. It becomes difficult to keep track of how far players have progressed in each protagonist’s story when that progress is spread across multiple save files."

Nakanishi further explains that the team went about adding creative ideas to the game itself to try and make sure people didn't need more than one save file, such as the ability to replay chapters whenever they please, retry battles, and rewatch cutscenes. While not the answer the multi-save slot enjoyers out there would have wanted, but at least Nintendo has tried to keep you in mind.
