Heads up, Tolkien fans: the biggest Lord of the Rings set LEGO has ever made is now available at Amazon. Previously a LEGO Store exclusive (where it’s been backordered for months), this massive city-scope build is now available at the internet’s preferred retailer. It still costs $649.99, but it also still comes with 8,278 pieces, making it one of the biggest LEGO sets ever, regardless of category.
It took a long time to piece together, but LEGO expert Kevin Wong built this set for IGN and wrote about the experience, awarding it “our highest recommendation.”
What’s so great about LEGO Minas Tirith, the capital of Gondor? For starters, it’s just straight-up impressive as a physical object. It’s a gorgeous white walled city, intricately detailed, that works as a decoration for whatever room you display it in. It’s big and impressive, despite that it’s made on a scale small enough to depict the entire city all in one set.
While the front of the set is micro-scale, the back of Minas Tirith depicts some of the city’s interiors in minifigure scale. One smaller room contains a Palantir that lets the owner see things happening far away. But the main room is the Hall of Kings, complete with the throne for the King of Gondor.
I know I’ve been tossing around words like “micro” and “mini,” but make no mistake, this is a huge set. Just look at the dimensions of the finished product above – it's roughly two feet tall and two feet wide. It comes in a giant box that contains about 60 bags of LEGO pieces. All told, it has over 8,000 pieces, meaning piecing it together is a marathon, not a sprint. But when you’re done, you’ll have a gorgeous piece of Lord of the Rings you can put on display for the rest of your life (as long as you don’t drop it).
