In a wonderful example of game respecting game, Grand Theft Auto 6 appears to have a reference to last year’s surprise standout, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
After years of waiting and an onslaught of last-minute leaks, GTA 6 finally got its long-awaited gameplay trailer earlier this week. The nearly 30-minute deep dive was crammed with a frankly overwhelming amount of details for players to spot, from new gameplay mechanics and side activities to a closer look at Jason and Lucia’s relationship.
Considering how long GTA 6 fans were able to survive off just two trailers and a bunch of screenshots, you probably won’t be surprised to learn that the Extended Look is already being analysed to hell and back. One of the most interesting discoveries I’ve seen since the trailer dropped is a very unexpected nod to one of this generation’s most beloved games.
As highlighted by Twitter user videotech and originally shared by Redditor Popular-Vehicle-8487 on the Clair Obscur subreddit, one quick shot in the Extended Look appears to pay tribute to Sandfall Entertainment’s masterpiece. Around the halfway point of the trailer, when we get multiple quick shots of life in Leonida, someone is shown using a VR headset.
I won’t describe what that gamer is doing in the privacy of their own room, but the interesting part of the clip is a poster seen on the wall. It’s very easy to miss, but Popular-Vehicle-8487 pointed out that it appears to be a reference to Clair Obscur. The font is incredibly similar to the one used in Clair Obscur’s title, and the poster even looks like the game’s cover art.
If that’s not enough to convince you, the poster features the words “Tenebrae Lux”, which translates to “Shadow Light” in Latin. That makes it very clear that it’s a reference to Clair Obscur, whose title translates to “Light Dark” in French. I wasn’t convinced at first, but all of those details combined don’t leave much room for doubt.
This is far from the only gaming reference in GTA 6, as leaks confirmed a surprisingly sharp jab at The Last of Us and its remasters.
If the poster really is a Clair Obscur reference like everyone seems to think, Rockstar must be especially big fans of the game to have whipped up an easter egg so fast. It’s hard to believe, but Clair Obscur only launched last year, which means the developers had to have locked in to get the timely nod into GTA 6.
