The mask puzzle in Onimusha: Way of the Sword appears during the What Lurks in the Shadows quest in the Underground Laboratory Level 3. After exploring the area and fighting through groups of Genma, Musashi eventually reaches a dojo where four strange masks drop from the ceiling.
This is where the game introduces the mask puzzle, and the solution is actually hidden in plain sight. Shizuka gives a useful hint by comparing the masks to archery targets, but there’s a certain order in which you have to shoot them. The mask puzzle is part of the What Lurks in the Shadows quest, specifically in the Underground Laboratory Level 3. Musashi encounters a large door with an unsettling face built into its lock. Interacting with the door shows that it cannot be opened yet. The first objective from here is to find a way to trigger the door’s mechanism.
From the locked door, head up the stairs and begin exploring the surrounding area. There are multiple closed doors to check along the way, and the area is filled with Genma enemies. Take the time to clear them out while exploring, especially since defeated enemies will give you souls to collect.
There are also some unusual creatures in this section. Shizuka mentions the animals taken from the cart and explains that perhaps they could be used as raw materials for the Nue. You’ll also run into Hitotsume Gasa enemies. These creatures can be particularly annoying because of their strange appearance and their ability to roll along the ground while using tentacles to attack Musashi from a distance.
Keep moving through the hallways until you eventually reach a dojo. Entering this room triggers a cutscene, and four disturbing masks suddenly drop down from the ceiling.
This completes the Find a way to trigger the door’s mechanism objective and begins the next objective: Solve the Mask Puzzle.
Once the cutscene ends, take a look around the dojo. Four masks are hanging from the ceiling, and they are the targets Musashi needs to shoot. Shizuka mentions that the masks resemble archery targets. That is the game's way of telling you that you’ll need to shoot them with your bow and arrow.
