Ordering food through DoorDash is probably one of the biggest examples of how modern life has grown incredibly convenient, but apparently, there are still some people who think scrolling through an app is too much work. Now, you'll be able to just text DoorDash and have it order food for you without needing to figure out what, exactly, you feel like eating.
DoorDash announced the feature earlier this week, and the idea is that you'll text an AI agent through iMessages – apparently Android support will come sometime in the future – an idea of what you want for dinner. Then, DoorDash's AI agent will browse through all the restaurants in your area and give you suggestions based on your past orders and what you included in your text.
One of the examples DoorDash includes is asking its bot for your usual Friday night order, and it'll remember what you usually get, along with any modifications you usually make. This is already pretty easy to do within the app, which usually has your last few orders at the top of the screen anyways. Ironically, texting a robot for your usual order might end up having more button presses than just opening the app and ordering normally.
In some ways, this actually feels like a blast from the past. SMS ordering used to be a thing, before the rise of smartphones. Dominoes introduced a way to order pizza by sending them an emoji all the way back in 2015, according to TechTimes. Though, to be fair, that was just one restaurant.
