My journey with both A Plague Tale games is one that’s remained very personal yet unexpected. What started as a recommendation from my mutuals back in 2020 to play Innocence soon turned into a gut-wrenching train crash to my heart as I rolled credits a couple of years later on Requiem to bid farewell to both Amicia and Hugo, two characters that I became so endearingly attached to, with the former becoming one of my favorite female video game protagonists of all time. I even have these two framed on my room wall via the game's official cover art.
Asobo Studio crafted such an emotional story in this bleak, wretched world that it almost made me wonder where the series could go next after the curtain call for the two siblings. And just like that, my question was answered in the form of Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy. Some hardcore fans might have already tuned in to the hands-on previews a month or so ago.
But for those that didn’t, well buddy, you better lock in because we’re going on a plundering adventure with Sophia, a character that many fondly remember from A Plague Tale: Requiem. This isn’t simply another chapter that’s trying to recreate what came before; it’s a chance for the series to explore a different story while carrying the same soul that made the series so memorable for fans. And after the credits rolled, I have so much to say about how this new direction sticks the landing, with some missteps here and there.
Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy serves as a backstory for one of Requiem's beloved side characters, Sophia. See, before she became involved with helping the De Rune siblings put an end to their rat problem, she had her own personal nightmares that she overcame, along with losing the many people that she cared for in the process. As a child, Sophia is forsaken to a convent to try to cleanse her sins, or rather the visions that haunt her at a waking notice. Soon enough, she's rescued and reunited with her father, Alec.
This leads to Sophia growing up alongside Alec's plundering gang of misfits and bandits, one of Venice's most revered thieves' guilds. But hey, you know we can't have happy endings in this series, right? Sophia soon learns that Alec and a group of other teammates perished during their excursion to the Minotaur Island, a place that also vividly appears in the heroine's recurring visions.
Alec's most loyal crewmate, Faro, takes Sophia under his wing, training her in the ways of being a warrior and skilled thief while also exploiting her visions to uncover more traces of the island. After a big job in Venice turns for the worse, Sophia returns to see that the whole gang and the hideout are in flames and ruins. With no chance to go back amid the ensuing chaos, an enraged Faro hot on their trail and a leap of faith with her dearest friend, Leni, the duo ventures to Minotaur Island to unravel Sophia's visions and figure out just exactly what the crew and soldiers are after there.
Firstly, I have to give props to how the team handled showcasing the preview. That version of the game sent you straight into the fifth and sixth chapters with a sparing amount of context and background information. Seeing everything unfold and reach that same stage again gave me a bit of personal gratification, now that I know the stakes and the characters' intentions. But besides that, I'm sure the one question that you'll have me grabbing my collar for is whether this story gives you the same emotional beats as the prior two games with the siblings. Well, I can answer that safely without spoiling anything.
