A bumper weekend of Kingdom Hearts 4 reveals at D23 started with a first look at the game’s Coco world. That makes two worlds revealed so far, alongside the more realistic-looking Quadratum, but fans expecting more new world reveals at a steady pace will want to rein in their expectations.
Tetsuya Nomura explained in a new interview with Famitsu that Kingdom Hearts 4 will have the most detailed worlds the series has ever seen. Considering the gap between games and the advanced hardware on which the next entry will be released, you’d certainly hope that would be the case. However, that additional detail comes at a cost, as it means there will be fewer worlds than Kingdom Hearts fans are typically accustomed to.
“This game features the most detailed worlds we’ve ever created. That’s why the total number of worlds isn’t very large,” Nomura confirmed. The KH director added that the timing of the Coco world reveal led fans to believe a second world might be revealed at the Kingdom Hearts panel the following day, joking that, “if we announced things at that pace, we’d run out of information pretty quickly before release.”
With more than a year to go until Kingdom Hearts 4 gets here, that probably means it’s going to be a while before we’re shown something, or somewhere, else entirely new to the series. There’s an expectation that we might see more at Tokyo Game Show, although Nomura noted that the team is deciding how to pace reveals and admitted there “might be a bit of a gap” before we’re shown anything new.
It also seems like the next time we’re shown something, it might be more of KH4’s Coco world. “The Coco world we revealed this time is only a small part of what’s to come,” Nomura explained. That’s really quite something considering how detailed the small snippet of that world we were shown is. That alone makes it feel like the trade-off of total worlds for more detailed ones is going to be worth it.
It’s not like it’s going to be a shorter game either. Nomura confirmed in the same interview that the script for Kingdom Hearts 4 is twice as long as the script for Kingdom Hearts 3. That’s a whole lot of lore and story being added to what is an already deep well, elements of Kingdom Hearts that might be more important to its most dedicated fans than anything else.
As for how many worlds we can expect Kingdom Hearts 4 to have, there are usually around 13 to 15. It’s unclear just how few more detailed worlds the next game will have compared to previous entries. No matter how many there are, it sounds like we’re going to be spending more time in them than in any worlds in previous games due to how deep they run and how long this game’s story is going to be.
