Does Jace Beleren Die In MTG Reality Fracture?

Does Jace Beleren Die In MTG Reality Fracture?

Jace Beleren is dead... Or is he? As one of Magic: The Gathering's oldest Planeswalkers, debuting in the OG Lorwyn set back in 2007, Jace has been a huge part of Magic's lore ever since. Now, with the introduction of the Reality Fracture set, which brings to a close a years-long storyline, we are being led to believe that Jace had gone too far and needed to be taken care of, but is Jace really dead?

We'll answer these questions using the lore Wizards of the Coast released in the lead-up to the launch of Reality Fracture, but some answers aren't entirely clear, so we'll also explore where the story may go next.

In short, yes, Jace Beleren is dead as far as the lore is concerned. Toward the end of the Reality Fracture storyline, as Jace tries to overwrite the Multiverse with his Echoverse, Vraska stabs him, marking another complex moment in their already bonkers relationship.

Despite Jace being killed, and we are truly led to believe he is dead, no trickery involved, his plan is still unraveling, and the Echoverse is still taking over the Multiverse at the time he is killed. However, right before he dies, he passes his Planeswalker Spark to Tam, greatly increasing her power and abilities, which she uses to call upon Emrakul, one of the three Eldrazi titans.

Despite Jace's passing, he still features on cards in the set, which are designed as snapshots to portray the story as it happens.

Tam offers Emrakul the Echoverse as a world to feast upon, which in turn will save the Multiverse. Emrakul agrees, and the Echoverse and Hexhaven are consumed; we assume taking all the Echoverse halves of the Echoed Pairs with it.

While we have no reason to believe that Jace's death is a deceptive play right now, it wouldn't be the first time a key character, or even Jace himself, has pulled the rug on players.

What feels different this time is the passing of the Spark to Tam. This means that even if Jace is alive somewhere, he's no longer a Planeswalker, much like Lilliana, who lost hers during the Desparkening, which occurred during March of the Machines.
