The Rabbit Haul explores a tale as old as time—a farmer rabbit trying to save and rebuild their home after it was ransacked by an out-of-control raccoon gang. This raccoon gang is called the Trash Panda Posse, and they refuse to let farmer Sprout have a single night of peace. Sprout is a skilled farmer, and the Trash Panda Posse won't stop until they can ravage as many crops as possible. However, Sprout has thought of a clever plan and has begun to plant crops built specifically for defense.
It's pretty easy to find games like Stardew Valley on Steam. These fellow cozy farm sims don't always hit the mark, but many of them have unique twists that set them apart in a genre that is becoming increasingly crowded. It takes a special genre shake-up to get my attention when it comes to farm sims now, and The Rabbit Haul has just enough of the genre's core features blended with fresh ideas that it ultimately works quite well.
On paper, a tower defense/cozy farm sim hybrid doesn't sound like a great fit. In reality, the contrasting genres make for an experience that has plenty of relaxing moments and its more sweat-inducing scenarios. The Rabbit Haul achieves a strong gameplay balance by blending two unexpected genres together, offering players the best of both worlds. As great as cozy farm sims are, they can sometimes grow a little bit boring, especially after playing so many different kinds. On the flip side, tower defense games can leave you begging for a breather, depending on the specific title.
The Rabbit Haul may not be a full-blown roguelike, but its roguelite qualities might appeal to fans of the genre. Seeing the term "roguelike" can also be intimidating for others, so The Rabbit Haul embracing a more forgiving roguelite formula that doesn't take away upgrades after losing a run takes some of the pressure off of saving Sprout's farm. That doesn't mean The Rabbit Haul isn't a challenge, though. The stronger Sprout's defense grows, the larger the map gets, which opens up new biomes that require different strategies. There are plenty of good tower defense games on Steam that stand out in the genre, and The Rabbit Haul's well-balanced premise could have what it takes to get the game on that list.
The uptick in cozy farm sim indie games since Stardew Valley has been a great way for small developers to be part of a growing trend, but now that it has been a full decade since ConcernedApe's solo-made hit kickstarted this renaissance, the genre needs to see some extra excitement. Cozy games without farming have been increasing in popularity because of this fatigue, and The Rabbit Haul has managed to bridge a gap that is hard to properly pull off. The game can still get the benefit of having a trendy genre attached to its name while also bringing something completely fresh into the spotlight to keep things interesting.
It's not like cozy farm sims are disappearing any time soon. The success of Fields of Mistria on Steam has been further proof that there are plenty of ways to make the genre feel new and exciting again. The Rabbit Haul is following in those same footsteps, except with a much different approach compared to Fields of Mistria.
Fields of Mistria tweaks the standard Stardew Valley gameplay formula by putting a greater emphasis on features like role-playing and its cast of characters, even adding a magic system into the equation. The Rabbit Haul spices things up with action-heavy nighttime sequences. Of course, the roguelite tower defense elements that make up half of The Rabbit Haul's gameplay might not appeal to every kind of farm sim lover. However, the game has a golden opportunity to be a great gateway title for gamers who have been curious about stepping into genres other than farming sims.
