I've played enough open-world RPGs at this point to know that a massive map doesn't automatically make me want to explore it. In fact, some of the biggest open-world RPGs I've ever played have probably been the ones I've seen the least of, simply because, as a completionist, I'll either get burnt out on doing all of the optional content, or I simply won't find it interesting enough to invest more time in than I have to. Once I've cleared the same activity a few times or realized that most of the places I'm finding exist for roughly the same reason, I usually stop wandering and start focusing on whatever gets me to the end.
However, every once in a while, an open-world RPG gets exploration right enough that I actually want to see everything it has to offer, and those are usually the games I remember most. These are the worlds where taking the long way around rarely feels like a waste of time, and where ignoring the main quest for a while can lead to some of the best moments in the entire game. When an RPG manages to do that, exploring from corner to corner starts feeling like the whole point of the experience.
This list focuses specifically on open-world RPGs that make exploration feel worthwhile, not simply games with the biggest maps or the most content.
I spent an absurd amount of time in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 doing absolutely nothing I had originally planned to do, because I just loved exploring the world to find some of the smallest, most seemingly insignificant things. For starters, the environmental storytelling in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is off the charts, creating some of the most immersive world-building I've ever experienced in an open-world RPG. I have played far too many open-world games where I essentially see the same corpses, charred buildings, and campsites copy and pasted across the map, and it just kills the immersion. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, on the other hand, feels like it always has another surprise waiting for me around the corner.

For example, during one of my regular off-the-beaten-path treks in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, I came across a random cottage in the woods. Outside the cottage was a table with enough seats for seven, and inside, a woman lay dead, surrounded by apples. It was obviously a reference to Snow White, but it really made my day. And Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2's world isn't just filled with Easter eggs either, as you can stumble upon other stories as well—like a duel between archers whose arrows had apparently killed each other at the same time. Needless to say, I've spent so much time with Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, and even so, I still manage to come across things I somehow missed before.
There are plenty of open-world RPGs where seeing something strange in the distance doesn't necessarily mean much, but Elden Ring trained me pretty early on to assume that if something looked interesting, there was probably a reason for it. Once I realized just how much of the Lands Between could be missed by sticking to the most obvious route, I stopped treating the main path like it was anything more than a suggestion. From there, every cliffside that looked like it might be hiding something became difficult to ignore.
