CD Projekt Red shared a new gameplay comparison between the original Witcher 3 and the upcoming remaster, and fans were quick to say the new footage actually looks worse.
The Witcher 3 Remastered arrives as a free upgrade on September 29, bringing overhauled combat, a new skill system, and “upgraded visuals and performance.”
CD Projekt Red posted a side-by-side comparison video to X on September 23, showing Geralt using his Igni sign to burn Drowners in Crookback Bog in both the original version and the remaster, and fans are less than impressed.
“Why does it look worse?” asked the top reply, with another asking, “Are you sure you didn’t swap the footage around?” There were tons of other replies saying the original footage looks better than the remastered.
Players pointed out that in the remaster, the fire doesn’t illuminate the surroundings or reflect in the water, and they also criticized the new fire effects, the more muted colors, and the lack of fog (which is actually because there’s a Foglet present in the original footage, but not in the remaster).
The reaction on the Witcher 3 subreddit was more mixed, with several players preferring the new fire effects but admitting it was a “strange comparison.”
It’s worth noting that the Remastered footage has the disclaimer: “Work in progress – does not represent the final look of the game.” So, the finished product may look much better than this comparison footage.
The remaster paves the way for 2027’s Songs of the Past expansion, which is set in Dandelion’s homeland and will bridge the gap between Wild Hunt and The Witcher 4.
