I'm still bitter about my massive collection of Hot Wheels die-casts being lost somewhere or donated as I grew up. But at least I have the fond memories of my dad letting me buy every single box of tracks or pack of eight cars whenever my mom was occupied with her own business. I can never forget getting my first real tracks with launchers and loops, or those specialized setpieces like the Octo Color Shifter, which was genuinely mind-blowing for 10-year-old me.

Even putting the IRL die-casts from Mattel aside, does anybody else remember Hot Wheels: Beat That! for the PS2? That game felt like an absolute dream come true the first time I saw it. And while we've since had some fairly good modern video games based on these gnarly-looking cars, like both the Unleashed titles, they never felt true to form like that, nor did they spark that same feeling of me imagining a whole chaotic theme park world for my own sets of cars as I did back as a kid.

Well, Milestone S.R.L. is answering that call for a fever-dreamt imaginative world with Hot Wheels Infinite Rush. They've crafted a Forza Horizon-like Hot Wheels game that blends a bunch of crazy ideas across its four main hubs of land. But as a childhood fan, just how well does it deliver the fun factor and spirit of the franchise? Well, after a hefty amount of time in the past two weeks digesting it all, I've seen enough to weigh in on Hot Wheels Infinite Rush on all fronts.

First, we need to cover what Milestone has built into the gameplay systems and mechanics. The foundation of Hot Wheels Infinite Rush is all about letting yourself loose in this colorful and freakishly charming world comprising four islands: Wheelswood, Tentacle Bay, Gearville, and Drifty Temples. Each island has its own unique thematic flair for the activities on it and just the general visual presentation, but no matter which one you're exploring or grinding your wheels in against your opps, being an absolute speed demon is still the signature sauce behind this eccentric racing game.

Hot Wheels has something inherently appealing as a video game property, especially when you date its popularity back to the golden era, when it had tons of licensed video games and even web-browser ones. You take these tiny little cars, throw them onto ridiculous orange tracks, add a few loops, jumps, explosions, and the occasional dinosaur or setpiece, and somehow the whole thing just works, whether it's for a kid or even a millennial adult. Milestone understood that appeal with Hot Wheels Unleashed, but Infinite Rush takes a considerably bigger swing.

Rather than keeping the cars confined to elaborate tracks built around everyday environments, Infinite Rush throws them into an entire Hot Wheels-sized theme park. Like, literally, it almost feels like stepping into Disney World for the first time, just admiring the sheer scale of everything that surrounds you before slowly taking it all in and getting used to the feeling.

It may not feel that way to you, but again, as someone who was obsessed with these cars and imagining a separate world for them, that's my biggest appreciation for it. You see, the greatest forte of Infinite Rush is that it finally feels like the kind of world you might have imagined as a kid while playing with Hot Wheels. The environments have that deliberately artificial, toy-box aesthetic, mashing up a whole city infrastructure with a whole array of larger-than-life creature models and other bizarre oddities.
