Graveyard Keeper 2 is probably one of the most anticipated indie games to date, with the first one having garnered quite the cult following for its darker take on the cozy genre. The sequel picks up right where the last one left off, but you don't have to worry too much if you don't want to go back and play through the first game from eight years ago.
The game actually does a fairly good job of catching you up bit by bit as you play through the opening hours, but there's still plenty of mystery to be had even if you consider yourself an expert. Much like the original, it is a fairly long game and plays similarly, but not everything here is an improvement to the formula.
With a focus on the story, automation, and the new combat systems, there's a lot to cover, so it's going to take you quite a bit of time to get things working the way they should. I really enjoyed my time with the game, but I'd be lying if I said it was all fun and games, as the game began to feel like a bit of a slog the farther I got.
Since Graveyard Keeper 2 is a direct sequel, there's a lot that is basically lifted straight from the first one and pulled in here. Basically, every addition to the game from the DLCs is present, to my knowledge. Things like holding sermons and zombie assistants are much more front and center in this game.
You'll still be the Keeper, and you'll have a graveyard to manage, but you'll have a lot more responsibilities. To save your butt at the very beginning of the game, you'll take on a new role: Inquisitor. Your job now becomes taking care of basically every problem, but also driving back the hordes of zombies threatening to overrun the Town.
On certain days, you can enter into battles to reclaim parts of the Town, either by using Mercenaries or by creating your own platoon of zombie soldiers. The combat boils down to fighting off waves of enemies as you attempt to capture various points on the map. Your allies can be led to certain zones and capture them, but the more people you have, the faster it goes.
Along with combat, there's a lot more automation in this game, which involves building underground to transfer goods where you want them to go via conveyor belts. That's a good chunk of the way into the game, though, and more than likely you'll spend a lot of time chasing down quests to complete to progress the story.
