The Witcher 4’s narrative lead has admitted that he can see why fans were so upset about Geralt not being the protagonist, as he originally felt the same way.
It’s a very good time to be a fan of The Witcher. Not only are we getting a brand-new expansion for The Wild Hunt later this year, but the long-awaited fourth game in the series has also recently been confirmed to be aiming for a 2028 release. There’s clearly no shortage of exciting projects in the works for one of gaming’s most beloved series.
I’d love to say that The Witcher 4 has generated nothing but excitement since it was first revealed, but that isn’t quite the case. A very vocal part of the fanbase has had a surprisingly tough time accepting Ciri as the game’s lead instead of Geralt, which is something that even some key CD Projekt Red developers initially struggled to accept.
As pointed out by GamesRadar+, The Witcher 4’s narrative lead, Philipp Weber, recently replied to a fan on Twitter who shared how much they’d rather play as Geralt instead of Ciri. Weber surprisingly admitted that he “felt like that as well” early on in development, so he understands why a lot of fans are struggling so much.
Weber went on to say that this reaction has made it CD Projekt Red’s job with The Witcher 4 to prove that “Ciri will be a worthy main character” for the game. That job is one that the team takes “very seriously”, so it’s clearly putting a lot of effort into making sure that Ciri is as much of a star of the show as Geralt was.
To really hammer that point home, Weber notes that Geralt will “always have an important role to play” in The Witcher, which was hopefully obvious with him getting a whole new expansion after more than a decade. We also already know that Geralt will play a role in The Witcher 4’s story, so it’s not like he’s being pushed to the side.
As much as I love Geralt, I still can’t believe the reaction to a character we all grew to love in the last game. Ciri rocks, and we all know it.
All of this is to say that it’s not just some Witcher fans who struggled with the idea of anyone other than Geralt leading the series. Some CDPR members clearly took some time getting used to Ciri as the protagonist too, and their clear confidence about it now hopefully makes it clear that The Witcher 4’s new star is the right move for everyone.
