Overnight, in the run up to Tokyo Game Show, Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja announced that Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember, the latest instalment in the studios' dark Three Kingdoms-inspired action-RPG series, will be released worldwide on 4th March 2027. The two companies also announced a huge alpha test for the game in the form of a free demo that provides an early look at the game, including an in-progress character creation system, and online multiplayer for up to three players.
The demo contains the "open field of Changban", effecitvely one entire level from the game, where you can "join forces with Liu Bei's army in fierce battles against the pursuing forces of Cao Cao, and encounter demons inspired by legendary Chinese classics." If you finish the demo, you'll get a Fledgling Phoenix Helmet as a bonus to be used in the full game - a perk that Team Ninja and Nioh fans will no doubt be familair with by now. Similarly, a survey will also be conducted in order to help facilitate feedback upon completion - Team Ninja really does pay attention to these, so I suggest you fill it in once you've given the demoa whirl.
The game is coming to Xbox Series X/S, PS5, Switch 2, and PC via both Steam and Xbox. The demo is available on all these platforms, too, and the final game will also come to Xbox Game Pass at launch.
To celebrate the announcement, the studio has released a new trailer (above) giving us an overview of the story, the key characters, and gameplay systems. This time, the battle moves on from the Yellow Turban Rebellion and the start of the Han Dynsaty conflicts, and moves into the Three Kingdoms era proper - the demo sees you join up with Liu Bei as he needles Cao Cao's defenses and tests the might of the legendary Wei Dynasty leader.
"Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember takes players to China in 208 AD, after the events of Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, when the village of the protagonist and their friend, Pang Tong, is devastated by Cao Cao's forces as they march to invade Jing Province, plunging the land into war with demons roaming freely," reads a press release. "Seeking revenge, the protagonist will clear the way for Liu Bei in his fight against Cao Cao's forces, before joining Sun Quan in Jiangdong where they meet again with Pang Tong to devise a plan to repel Cao Cao as he sets his sights on the Red Cliffs.
"These two fledging talents, endowed with intelligence and courage, will soar through the skies above the decisive battle, taking on demons on the battlefield with an enhanced combat system. Players will rediscover the fast-paced combat of Wo Long, which combines attack and defence with evolved actions exclusive to this sequel. Using Insight Skills, they will be able to evade enemy attacks and use the terrain to their advantage to launch counterattacks, or even shift the momentum when outnumbered, making the fights even more acrobatic, exhilarating, and deadly than ever before."
I had chance to play the demo at Gamescom, and it's safe to say I'm impressed - I think Wo Long 2 acts as a sort of nexus point for everything Team Ninja has learned from working on Nioh, Ninja Gaiden, and Dead of Alive.
