Nintendo Updates Zelda Timeline, Seemingly Confirming A Fan Theory

Nintendo has often stressed its desire to place gameplay above all else, including story. Yet with the company providing (and updating) an official Legend of Zelda timeline, fans have understandably become quite invested in the entire concept.

Now, with the upcoming release of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on Switch 2, Nintendo has once again updated the timeline, seemingly confirming a fan theory in the process. To explain as simply as we can (and with lots of help from Zeltik's video above), there is a theory that there are 'two' Hyrules: one founded following the events of Skyward Sword, and another after the timeline's reunification and prior to the events of Breath of the Wild.

The new official update seems to straight up confirm this, with entries noting the 'founding of Hyrule' near the beginning of the timeline and toward the end. What this suggests, then, is that when Zelda goes back in time during Tears of the Kingdom, the founding of Hyrule she witnesses is actually the second instance that this has occurred.

Zeltik has also noticed a few interesting details in the Ocarina of Time remake which seems to indicate an effort from Nintendo to link the game to the wider timeline. The first of these is the pattern seen when using the Lens of Truth, a Sheikah relic. The faint pattern depicted shows a swirling texture that's remarkably similar to patterns seen in Breath of the Wild on ancient Sheikah devices. The same pattern can also be seen on Impa's armour.

Another interesting similarity can be seen on the tattoos seen on certain Kokiri characters like Mido and the shopkeeper. These tattoos are almost identical in pattern to that of Queen Sonia from Tears of the Kingdom.

These similarities might seem superfluous and coincidental on the surface, but it seems clear that Nintendo is making a concerted effort to ensure that the iconography seen in the new Ocarina of Time remake aligns with those seen in later timeline titles.
