The Halo franchise has a storied history when it comes to its development. From the very first entry in 2001 to Halo 3 in 2007, the series was in the hands of Bungie. Ensemble Studios then stepped in to develop Halo Wars in 2009, before Bungie took over again in 2009 and 2010.
From Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary in 2011 to 2021’s Halo Infinite, the series had been in development at 343 Industries, which in the past two years rebranded to Halo Studios.
After the announcement by Matt Booty, Chief Content Officer, of further XBOX restructuring, it has been revealed that Halo will have another change of guard. Activision will create the next Halo title, and the company has issued a statement on its goal for the future of this beloved video game universe.
Since Halo Studios has been relegated to a support studio following layoffs, it’s hardly surprising that Halo would be placed under a new team.
It was stated as part of the second round of XBOX layoffs in less than four months that studios belonging to the XBOX portfolio would also be consolidated. As a result, Activision will be developing the next Halo game, but it will be kept separate from the continued development of the Call of Duty franchise.
This new era for Halo will be led by a new, purpose-built team, and what remains of the dismantled Halo Studios will continue supporting the community and games in-market.
In a statement provided by Activision President Rob Kostich to Game File, Kostich said, “For Halo, our goal is clear: make the greatest Halo game ever, worthy of its universe and legacy, while staying true to what made players love it in the first place. It is a bold ambition, one that this franchise deserves. We have already begun assembling a purpose-built team, unique in capability and talent, ready and excited to deliver this next chapter with the community.”
It’s unknown what specifically Activision may have in store for the next Halo entry, but it appears that they are committed to creating an experience that sticks to its roots. Since Activision has only just “begun assembling a purpose-built team,” an official game reveal is likely to be a very long way out.
