As we continue to learn more and more about the Xbox Disc to Digital feature due to its rollout for Xbox Insiders, it's been discovered that some games only work if you use certain physical variants, with one example being Battlefield 4.
The folks behind the XCT.live social media account mentioned this earlier today, stating they were "convinced" about their findings (mentioning Call of Duty: Ghosts as a possible culprit in the process), while others started to suggest that Battlefield 4 was affected as well.
Now, what's interesting here is that both COD: Ghosts and BF4 are games that launched back at the start of the Xbox One generation, and there's a belief that many releases from those early days didn't come with a per-disk identifier.
That would explain why the 2016 variant is providing a Disc to Digital license but the 2013 version isn't, and the same should apply to many other titles that were re-released after initially debuting in 2013 or (most of) 2014.
Beyond that though, there's even a suggestion that 2016's Forza Horizon 3 — which has been widely reported as not compatible with the Disc to Digital service — is working for some people and not others right now.
It's going to take a while for everyone to figure out which variants work with which games, although the folks at XCT.live are already specifically building a list of "variant-dependent" titles for the Disc to Digital program based on community findings. Let's not forget that Xbox is hoping to keep adding more titles in the coming weeks and/or months as well.
They've even suggested that you should keep your discs and try them again at a later date if they're not working at the moment, so perhaps they'll figure out a way to ditch this whole "variant" thing as we move forward.
For now though, this is a PSA that even if a game isn't reported to work, it's worth trying your specific disc just in case!
